Fitness-For-Duty Assessment

Workability Injury Assessment (WIA) *
This post-injury assessment is performed at the work-site during the acute or sub-acute phase of recovery to evaluate the worker’s compatibility with job demands and need for transitional work or therapy activities to expedite return to FULL DUTY. Exam components include:

  • Review of claims circumstances, subjective complaints, and functional job demands
  • Evaluation of objective, neuromuscular findings that support claims allowances
  • Testing of worker restrictions related to lifting, agility and dexterity

A WIA helps prevent unnecessary lost-time or restricted duty days. Referral should be considered when the physician will not release the worker to modified duty, the worker reports difficulty with assigned transitional work duties, or the worker has not progressed back to FULL duty within a reasonable time period.

Functional Capacities Evaluation (FCE) *
This is a comprehensive evaluation of the extent of physical disability for injured workers that have chronic neuromuscular conditions to:

  • Determine if Maximum Medical Improvement has been reached or if continued treatment is warranted
  • Assess a wide range of physical abilities, effort, and consistency of performance with exam findings, claims allowances, medical records findings and lifestyle
  • Facilitate worker accommodations, job search, or settlement proceedings
A limited version of an FCE may be performed in combination with an independent medical exam at one of Workabilities Regional Exam Centers.

Workability Fitness Screen *
This an objective, post-offer screen of workers entering physically-demanding jobs to:

  • Identify pre-existing conditions for work injury claims
  • Assess baseline work functional abilities and job compatibility
  • Train workers in proper lifting mechanics or preventive exercise

This service may be bundled with a urine drug screen to meet Drug-Free Workplace requirements. For more information, download Why post-offer fitness screens are an absolute necessity.

* These assessments include a Summary Report of Workability includes a convenient review and sign-off area for the Attending Physician. Limited assessments may be repeated at periodic intervals during recovery to help determine when the worker has reached Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI).

Rehabilitation Services

Transitional Work-Site Therapy **
This consists of productive work and therapeutic activities at the work site to assist the injured worker with work restrictions in progressing to FULL DUTY in a targeted job. Therapeutic activities may include progressive conditioning, training in safe work practices, periodic re-assessments of work restrictions, job modification assistance and care conferences with all concerned parties.

Out-Patient Clinic Therapy **
An individualized therapy program performed at a convenient clinic that is focused on return to work goals during the acute and sub-acute recovery phase. Aquatic therapy is available as some provider locations for clients that do not tolerate weightbearing activities during therapy.

Work Conditioning Program **
This individualized therapy program is focused on regaining optimal function and return to work through an active program that includes physical conditioning and job simulation tasks. This service is justified when there is a vocational goal (job title), but the injured worker does not have to the option to perform transitional work duties in a specific job.

** The supervising therapist provides regular updates of the worker’s functional progress based on objective tests and measurements. Our Workability Treatment Plan includes a convenient review and sign-off area for the Attending Physician.

Ergonomic Consultation

Ergonomic Safety Study
An ergonomic study is an analysis of how the worker responds when performing a job in relation to the work environment. A Certified Professional Ergonomist reviews the impact of injury on the worker’s job performance to:

  • Identify risks for work-related musculoskeletal disorders
  • Establish physical qualifications for safe job performance
  • Recommend job modifications that enable the injured worker to work safely and productively within specified workabilities

Job Modification Assistance
An ergonomics expert may assist the employer with removal or alteration of physical barriers that may prohibit an injured worker from performing the essential job functions or obtaining employment. Job modification is generally used for return to work positions that are considered permanent.

Therapy Case Review
This review of records is completed to:

  • Determine appropriateness of diagnosed conditions related to the injury or occupational disease claim
  • Assess appropriateness of ongoing or requested treatment
  • Facilitate release to return to full duty, release to return to work with restrictions, or referrals for rehab services.

May include a telephone consult with the attending physician to facilitate appropriate treatment or cooperation with return to work release.

"The Workability Systems FCE report is easy to read and includes very useful, objective information about neuro-musculoskeletal findings and workabilities. I do not believe in guessing about the functional restrictions of workers that do not return to FULL DUTY in a timely manner. WorkAbility Systems makes more sense than other FCE reports that I have reviewed. "
